DogsInSight is owned and run by ourselves, Mike and Samantha (Sam). As well as lifetime dog lovers, we have been formally trained by one of Britain’s most well-respected and experienced Dog Behaviourists. Themselves trained by a world-renowned Behaviourist.
For your peace of mind we are CRB checked and fully insured.
Based in South Derbyshire we cover the City of Derby and the surrounding areas; the East Midlands and beyond.
How Our Journey Started
Like so many people in the UK, dogs have always been a major part of our lives. Depending on whose home you visited over the years you would have been welcomed by an ever-present Poodle or Bassett Hound, each one an essential member of the family. In fact, Samantha’s family have only ever had Bassett Hounds – there have been 6 to date. All were dogs that had been re-homed for some reason or other, each one having its own personality. One even appeared on TV!
All of them helped give Sam her love and respect for dogs. As for me, in my youth I used to love walking a friend’s German Shepherd, never understanding why people could be scared of such a beautiful, magnificent and wonderfully friendly animal. Obviously, I now know the reasons why but I still feel the same about dogs (not just Shepherds!)

When our working lives allowed us to consider getting a dog of our own, we decided to re-home a nice gentle Bassett. After much talk and many visits to the kennels we came home with – of course – an enormous Mastiff! He had been put behind bars, at the same time as his previous owner, and had not been well treated. He had all manner of issues, but somehow we knew that he was basically a good dog.
We loved that dog and he gave us a rapid education, a lot of great stories and best of all he started us along a path of rescuing, re-homing and rehabilitating Mastiffs.
Rehabilitation and Training
Just as we started to think that we were good at it, we were asked to foster and assess another Mastiff whom the Re-home and Rescue people described as the most challenging dog they had ever encountered – and they had met 100s!
That dog quickly showed us that we needed to expand our knowledge and skill base.
We were then very fortunate to meet and spend every available moment over many intensive months learning from, and training with, one of Britain’s most passionate; respected and experienced Dog Behaviourists.
Having helped us so much it was only right that we gave that dog a permanent home with us!
Some time later we bumped into the head of the Rehome and Rescue at a Dog Show.
Their look of astonishment when they realised who the soft and friendly dog they were fussing actually was, is something that we will remember for a long time!
Along the way we are grateful to have met and learnt from so many wonderful dogs and their owners and we look forward to meeting many more as we help with your Dog Training as well as Behavioural issues.
We also volunteer for ‘The Cinnamon Trust’ a wonderful charity that supports, amongst others, elderly and vulnerable people when they need help with their pets. Please research what they do as they may be able to help someone you know.
Our Mission
We will, where possible, explain, demonstrate and ensure you know how to do what you need to do in order to improve your dogs behaviour.
We are different to most other Trainers in several ways, for example, we do not believe in the extensive use of treats to “bribe” your dogs. In fact, we don’t use any gimmicks at all, we believe in using things that you would normally have with you ie your body and your voice.
