One thing that always surprises us is the amount of times Clients quote an accepted “Canine Truism” that is not actually true, either in part or in its entirety. These are usually misleading but can also have a detrimental effect on the training.
One such example is a version of the ever popular
“There are no bad dogs only bad owners”
This is a problem because, for a start , it is a sweeping statement. Okay, It could apply to older dogs who have been in a bad environment and have Behavioural issues as a result of the humans involved.
However, unfortunately, it is not necessarily true of Puppies! If the well meaning and good intentioned Clients believe it applies to them (the people the dog has come to live with) it can affect their confidence and reputation.
The reality is the dog may have arrived with issues, you do not receive an equal sized blank sheet of paper.
The lack of enforcement of the 2006 Animal Welfare Act, the ease with which people can set up as a breeder and the existence of the horrible Puppy Farms/Mills, has meant that pure profit is the objective. As a result there is little or zero consideration given to the parents. Their personality, character, behavioural issues and medical conditions can all be passed on to the litter. When you consider the conditions that far too many puppy production mothers are kept in, it should be no surprise to learn that there is a very good chance that they are not going to be healthy or stable.
Responsible Breeders will consider the parents and the consequences. Irresponsible Breeders will not.
So, please give your next Puppy purchase at the very least, as much thought as your next car. Your bargain shiny new motor from ‘Bodgeit and Sons’ on Dodgy Street is likely to have more problems than the one purchased from the established dealer.
